Although there isn't that much to see on this photo, and maybe some people would think this as a bad thing about a picture, I for myself love the calmness and feel of ancient times. This place hasn't been lived in for hundreds of years, but once somebody built it by the sweat of his brow, and it still stands, a little cracked, not very clean, but firm and chill. The slight HDR makes the old stone walls look extremely three-dimensional and alive, which captures perfectly this exact feel I just described. I also like the light and shadows. Especially the shadow in the background part of the picture keeps it far away, while the brighter part near the photographer/viewer makes the photo seem even more three-dimensional and realistic. It's great, too, that the brightest region is in the middle of the picture, and with that making the gaze of the observer circling from the foreground to the background, from light to shadow, and back. The colours, while all in all very similar, fit the motive and let it, especially in the bright part, come out wonderful. What spoils this a little bit though is the pale green of the background wall, which in my opion makes the ochre tone look dirty or sick where the two colours meet. Also the whole picture looks slightly crooked to the right, especially on the left side of the picture. These are just minor points of criticism, and all in all I believe this is a very appealing and great edited photo.
Judged by his other shots, the photographer is a man of many talents and he is well capable to produce impactful images without much digital manipulation. Therefore if he chose HDR here he must had have his reasons. The colors are striking, composition is beautiful and balance out the fact that this is not the first image we see about similar subjects. Only the halo between the bright and dark areas on the far left needs to be corrected. The line of arches is skillfully used to add depth. What only concerns me is the impact. If I see an image like this, I want to feel the sunlight, smell the dust, hear my steps echoing under the archs. I want to be engulfed by what I see. However, this impact was lost just because it's even better than what the eye really sees. I don't have the feeling of being there, it's like a glass of Metaxa which turns out to smell and taste like water. Instead the "I want to be there" feeling, I get a beautiful sight that I know is not for real, and due this lack of reality it can't give any sensual experience. Despite all the beauty and skillful editing, for me it's just an eye candy.
