what is STREET photography - Streets of Athens

If you like what you see, :+favlove: this article
so it can reach as many deviants as possible.

This journal is dedicated to the most special person I've met in dA
who also happened to take care of the Street gallery during the last 12 months,
as a small gift, or another way of saying "thank you". Or rather
"Grazie! :glomp:"

"Being a great street photographer doesn't make you a great street CV. That's I'm sure something that the dA staff is well aware of. It REQUIRES to be a great street photographer, but it takes a lot of other skills:
- Accept to spend a lot of time, finding the hidden gems of this huge community, browsing hundreds of images every day, fighting the overdose, and keeping a fresh eye. If I look at the exposure that the recent Street DD awardees had prior to receiving this DD, I am very happy to see that a lot of them were highly underrated. Mary has shed some light on people who were unknown to most.
- Having other connections to Street photography outside this community, to avoid macerating in one single community culture. Through her journals, though her reading that she was sharing with us, Mary kept bringing high quality papers to educate and open the debate
- Being geared with super powers to justify everyday the relevance of the chosen daily deviation. I have followed some of these battles that Mary has fought, full of jealousy, bitterness, rudeness, ignorance. She found the right words, being polite with the jerks, justifying her choices, finding ways to use humor where most would have only dreamt of smashing the opponent.
Of course, I could be selfish and say that I need a handkerchief because I don't want to change CV, but I have also a greater fear: See Mary relieved from that burden, and not being willing anymore to fight the overdose of daily images. It is time for her to be selfish, use her time to pet the camera rather than the computer mouse, but I still hope that she will be around to bring smiles on my face with her fantastic and original images, her humorous and elevated comments and her well documented journals!"

"Mary will be missed as the street CV as she has done such an incredible job.
I don't know how she finds the hours in a day to bring up a family, work full time, take photos, edit AND fulfill her duties as the CV to such a high standard.
Her photos have always been an inspiration to me, she certainly has her own vision and doesn't just trot out the same stuff, she is always exploring new avenues of creativity.
And, of course, and I know everyone would agree,
she is such a delightful person too - The Sweetheart of dA - we all love her!"

PEN-at-Work:

"Few photographers inspire me more than this amazing woman. There so many ways to take great photographs but perhaps the truly great ones are created before they are actually taken, - inside the head of their creators. And my God does this woman have a brain that knows how to see. It is as if she found a secret entrance into Plato's shadow world. Well, maybe I should talk about her work as CV rather than as a photographer. "Thank you" are two majestic little words when they come together, but they seem a bit futile when summing up her contribution to dA's street shooters. Nevertheless, thank you for all you have done!"

"First of all, let me say that Mary did excellent job as a street CV. She is not just a nice person and a considerable street photographer but most of all I think she's a great mentor and a source of inspiration. Through her journals and other publications the street community on deviantart has received more than a handful of new ideas, thoughts and views. Mary has always been there for all of us. I'll be watching her, following her work, listening to her and reading her journals. I suggest you do the same."

"Mary's photographic approach is sophisticated, clever, and emotionally powerful. She's has a keen eye for uncovering mundane scenes and somehow extracting beauty out of these every-day scenes.
Equally impactful is Mary's dedication to her work as a CV here on dA. Her many educational journals have impacted many of us and have taught us many important aspects of (street) photography as well as made us think about the purpose of street photography and its ethical implications.
Mary will be missed! "

"-Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything with the way you see them.- Eliott Erwitt
For me, Mary's photography is eaxctly this. Her images offer a glimpse into her way of looking at the world and are full of surprise and emotion.
Thanks, Mary, for offering your time and energy to the street community. Thanks for inspiring us all and for being who you are."

StamatisGR:

"When Mary took over as the Street gallery CV in this site, I knew she would do a great job. She did much more than that! She did an amazing, fantastic, incomparable job, with a dedication and passion I doubt anyone else will show. She motivated and showcased everyone who shoots street in this site and her journals can be used as references by everyone who wants to find out what "street" is and how "street" is done. She put countless hours during her time, to promote the genre either as the Street CV, or as a Yard administrator, or as an amazing and inspirational photographer. And I'm happy and proud of having met her. Not so much for what she did for "street", but for being an irreplaceable, valuable friend, a tireless, unpretentious teacher with a sharp eye, a reliable co-administrator, an endless inspiration and most of all an amazing person, a truly one of a kind lady."

Have a nice weekend.
