Defining Street Photography

Most types of photography can be easily defined by their subjects. A wedding photographer takes pictures of weddings. A portrait photographer poses someone and takes their picture. The nature photographer covers a wide area, but it is easy to categorize.
Street photography is difficult to define because it can encompass just about any subject.
If I were to ask you to name a few famous street photographers, you might pick, Garry Winnograd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or maybe Robert Frank. But if I asked you to define street photography that would be more difficult. You might say that street photography is candid pictures of strangers on the street. That might be a good start, but it doesn't really

What do we need to shoot a Street picture?
1. A camera
Whatever kind of a camera is good. Either it is a ridiculously expensive rangefinder or an unbelievably cheap point and shoot compact. Either it shoots digital or it shoots film. Either it weighs a ton or it weighs few grams. ANY camera is fine as long as you have it with you. The most expensive rangefinder or SLR is completely useless if it's been left at home! So...Carry a camera. Always.
2. A public place
This can be out in the streets or at the beach or inside a hotel's lounge or in a diner place or inside a supermarket or a mall or a school or whatever PUBLIC place. This public place must be visible in our picture. And things must be happening in this public place.

Let's close our eyes and imagine going out in the streets and looking for unusual things. What do we expect to find? People, first of all.
That's good, the HUMAN PRESENCE is a fundamental element of street photography.
If we want to use only this ingredient, we'll be able to realize a true street photo only if the person we capture will have something unusual or interesting or is doing something unusual or interesting. Otherwise we'll have a good portrait, an enviromental portrait, a wide portrait whatever, but not a street photo.

WHAT IS STREET PHOTOGRAPHY?
Trying to define a genre of photography like Street, it implies the consciousness that one definition will never be enough, or exhaustive, or able to cover the molteplicity of its possibilities and situations. Nevertheless let's try to comprehend the philosophy behind the passion for street photography.
Let's start stating that a street photo is not a  photography of streets and it is not necessarily a photo taken in a street. So what does 'street' mean? Street is whatever background or surrounding, not staged, not posed by the photgrapher. And street is whatever photography which captures, explores humanity, the human behaviour, the relationships between individuals and between individuals and their surroundings.

As we all know from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding everything was invented by the Greeks.
Well, ok we left some trivial things to be invented by the Chinese as well.
What you may not know is that Street photography was also invented by the Greeks before Photography itself was even invented.
Seriously now:
Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment or "the supreme moment". The Greeks believed the concept of Kairos is achieved when such a moment is grasped for otherwise the moment is gone and cannot be re-captured. According to ancient Greeks, Kairos was the god of the “fleeting moment.”

 is an old idea of mine which has its roots in the #The-Yard-Collective group, long before it was even a group. Older deviants remember the time when groups were clubs. I started posting this weekly feature back then, every Friday afternoon, showcasing 7 street shots that had been submitted to the club and had caught my attention during the past week. The feature lasted for a long time, untill I left dA  for personal reasons for few months. When I got back in dA and wore the Street CV hat, the idea of reviving this weekly feature came up again vividly. This time my intention was to showcase and promote street shots from all over deviantArt.

I finally got around to putting together a new book. And because it turned out kind of big and rather expensive, I thought I'd add a smaller, reduced "pocket" version (64 frames instead of ~100 in the "big" version). They are both a little more sophisticated and imo "richer" than my previous try "reciprocities": I now have photos on every page, not just one per double page, and they are supposed to "work" together on one or another level. It is subdivided in four geographical (not chronological) chapters: berlin, léman (lake geneva area), london and vancouver. Those who bought the recoprocities book might find that I used 4 or 5 pictures again as they just made sense in the sets they're in, but there's also quite a few frames in there that I have never shown to anyone before.

If any of you should decide to support me by buying one or two, my profit is about 10-12€ per copy sold and I promise to spend it all on my photography.

Four Cantos - By Eric Strijbos from 30,95 €

The book has 80 pages and is in full-colour. You may recognize a number of pictures that are already in my gallery, but most of the work is unpublished. Also, a number of the pictures that you may know, have been seriously redone. Apart from achieving at least a hint of quality, my concern was that the book was really a book, a flowing visual story that occasionally makes you leaf back and forth, and not a "best-of" collection of pictures with a cover around it. I hate artistic ego-documents, but it has been my experience, here too, that, while the lens may point away from you, it may still show something of your innermost soul. If anything, I'd call my book a "we-document", it's about people, any people, not just tourists and Italian. So, it's not really a travel book either.

Been gone too long; this is the first time I've heard of `SimonSawSunlight's work in book form!

A tip anyone can figure out, but I figured I'd drop anyway because whatthehell: If you go to a Blurb site in a different language, then automatically switch to the English site, it won't redirect to the link in question in English. Just search for the book name and it's right there.
So, Largely Unnoticed, Haphazard Anthropology in Short, and Haphazard Anthropology are some English links.

Intend to buy those two when funds allow, and look at others a little more after that. Photography, especially street photography, seems to be on such a different level when you have it in print and in a collection like these. :love:
