This got a DD? Oh Gosh! Seriously???

Wed Feb 15, 2012, 5:55 AM
This journal was inspired by a recently featured street DD and contains various comments from various deviants.
I won't show you the image. Could be any street image in its place.

"You know at first I was like, "I don't get why this has a DD." Then after reading your comment and everyone else's, it made sense."

"I don't understand how this got a DD, but alright....."
On a seperate comment from the same deviant at the same picture:
"Wait, I do understand now.... It takes a moment of observation until you realize how truly amazing this is."

"I had to observe it for a minute until I realized how absolutely amazing this actually is."

"I'll admit at first glance I didn't see anything special about it, but then it started to sink in and I think it's a marvelous shot!"

"It takes a moment of observation until you realize how truly amazing this is."

"i dont understand this picture neither. why its on daily deviations is beyond me."

"I don't understand this picture!"

"excuse me, but... i don't get it"

"I too, did not see what was going on with the picture till I read your thoughtful explanation . This is a great photo and it shows a lot about human society."

Street Photography.
Some people get it. Some not.
One thing is for sure. It takes more than a pair of eyes to appreciate it.
It takes brains. It takes time and vision.
Is it picture taking? No. Is it fine art? No. It is Street Photography.

If you don't get it, we're fine. Just spare us your comments.
Or better not. We do have fun reading them

Last comment from a deviant on this DD:
"Remember, a DD is not an award for fine art pieces, it was created as a way to expose lesser-known artists to the deviantArt audience. pieces were chosen by moderators depending how they individually thought if it should get more attention.
Every time a piece that doesn't show an obvious amount of technology and/or effort is given a DD, people say it was undeserving. the 'daily deviation' feature is not much more than a dashboard or a newsfeed, broadcasting artists you may not have heard of. the 'feature' box would contain a few words on why it was chosen, NOT why it was a great piece of art.
It is up to the audience to say if it's good or not, but when your argument is fueled by its DD, it becomes obsolete because a DD means very little in terms of 'artistic quality.' a DD simply says that both the suggester and the moderator felt this artist deserved a bit more attention. you not thinking it deserves a DD means you don't think this artist deserves an extended audience."

This guy became a CV? Oh Gosh! Seriously???

I really can't see why people post that 'I can't see why it got a DD' comments. If you don't like the piece leave some constructive criticism, not the blah blah.

As Florian said I don't think this is unique to Street...it happens across the board in all genres. Can't keep all the people happy all the time...but they would be if they'd just sit back and enjoy a smoke :weed:

One thing I find distorting is how the DD is tarnished by many as nothing more than highlighting an unknown's work. With over, I don't know, 3, 4, 6 million DA users...we are all unknowns. But that being said I have seen many "popular" artists/photographers win the "award" time and again. Three, 4, 7, 10 and more I'm sure. I honestly see it as a major accomplishment and yes an award with all the usual accolades that receiving one should bring.

one of the reasons dA changed the 3 months rule to a 6 months one, is to give a chance to different people to be featured.

I kinda figured that out after I asked  Thank you for replying.
Hope it works...I still stick to my theory that having three judges decide which photo receives a DD would be a better hedge against "repeats" getting one every three months. My feelings are with the new system they will only have to wait an additional three months. What in this new system is there that I am missing that will change CV habits or social nepotism?

You know, one of the most important things my parents taught me was to always stay curious and never ever to think I might actually know it all on day, that would be a terribly boring life. If some people would just stay open minded and actually look beyond their noses a whole new world would unravel for them.

The negative comments actually betray their ignorance.

My favorite comments are:
"...?"
and
"why is this a DD? dafuq?"
:lmao:

What I enjoy in street photography is that it requires sense of observation and imagination BOTH in who takes the image and in who looks at it, and that is stimulates observation and imagination in such a way that the viewer can participate, complete and reconstruct the image...

unfortunatelly street and photojournalism, is the kind of the photographic art that requires the viewer to have political, historical, social etc knowledge ,to appreciate (every form of art has those requirements, to understand the full depth of it, but lets say street and pj focuses more on that, rather than on technique or optical quality issues). DA comments, are just DA comments, its like what they say about opinions...
the exact same picture if its shot in Bangladesh, or New York, or the antarctica, it might be completely different in the "reading" of the image.
The same counts for the brain of the viewer, its different if its located in the US or Asia etc

DA audience lack of culture and education, even for the simplest portrait, or landscape, its no surprise they find it hard to appreciate a street photo

Well, at least they realized eventually :|

People love to have everything obvious and served with a golden spoon. But when looking at art you have to take your time. You cannot judge a work after nothing but a short glimpse.

I wish people would spent more time observing what they look at :)

Maybe it's a matter of available time and quantity of info to absorb.
In the past, people had more available time and less info to flood them.
Art...I wonder if there will be a place for art in the new era that's coming.

I'm so glad Ola got the DD, as I thought I'd favoured it when he put it up, back last Spring :#1:

I think a lot of folk don't see the whole picture, they're to used to looking at bits :D
